REGISTRATION FOR POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

ACADEMIC YEAR - 2024

This Institute the one and only Postgraduate Institute established for Postgraduate Studies in the field of Buddhist Studies in Sri Lanka, invites applications for the following courses of study until January 31th, 2024.

  1. Postgraduate Certificate Courses
  2. Postgraduate Diploma
  3. Master of Arts (one-year / two-year)
  4. Higher Degrees by Research (MPhil and PhD)

The courses will commence in February 2024.

English Medium Lectures   - Online and on-site lectures on weekdays and/or weekends

Sinhala Medium Lectures   - Online and on-site lectures on weekends and/or on weekdays (after office hours)

Final Examinations              - On-site

01.Postgraduate Certificate Courses

01.1 Certificate Course in English for Buddhist Studies (only in English Medium)

Minimum Entry Qualifications:

  1. The candidate seeking admission to this course should have a Degree or any other acceptable qualification.

 

Course fee - Rs 20,000.00*

01.2 Certificate Course in Pali for Postgraduate Buddhist Studies - One Year

Minimum Entry Qualifications:

No prior knowledge in Pali is required to enroll in this course provided that the applicants fulfill one of the following requirements.

  1. A Degree from a recognized university
  2. Any other qualification acceptable to the Faculty Board of the Institute

Course fee (for local students) - Rs 30,000.00*

 

01.3 Certificate Course in Chinese for Postgraduate Buddhist Studies

- One Year (only in English Medium)

Minimum Entry Qualifications:

No prior knowledge in Chinese is required to enroll in this course provided that the applicants fulfill one of the following requirements.

  1. A Degree from a recognized university
  2. A pass at the final examination of the Oriental Studies Society (Sri Lanka)
  3. Any other qualification acceptable to the Faculty Board of the Institute

Course fee - Rs 30,000.00*

 

  1. Postgraduate Diploma
    • Postgraduate Diploma in Pali - One Year

Minimum Entry Qualifications:

Basic knowledge of Buddhism and familiarity with Pali is a pre-requisite for admission to the course.

Those who have a first degree from any recognized university in any subject/subjects are

eligible to apply for this course provided they fulfill one of the following requirements:

  1. A pass in the First Examination of Oriental Studies Society (Sri Lanka) or a credit pass

for Pali at the G.C.E (O/L) Examination

  1. A pass in Pali at the Bauddha Dharmacharya Examination
  2. A pass in the Certificate Course in Pali for Postgraduate Buddhist Studies conducted by the Institute
  1. Any other qualification acceptable to the Faculty Board of the Institute

Course fee (for local students) - Rs 35,000.00*

 

02.2 Postgraduate Diploma in Buddhist Studies - One Year

Minimum Entry Qualifications:

The candidates seeking admission for this course should have one of the following qualifications:

  1. A degree from a recognized university
  2. A pass at the Final Examination of the Oriental Studies Society (Sri Lanka)
  3. Any other qualification acceptable to the Faculty Board of the Institute

Course fee (for local students) - Rs 35,000.00*

 

  1. Master of Arts (One Year / Two-year)

03.1 Master of Arts in Pali - One Year

Minimum Entry Qualifications:

Basic knowledge of Buddhism and a good command of Pali language is a pre-requirement

for admission to the course. The candidates seeking admission to this Course should have at least one of the following qualifications:

  1. A Special Degree in Pali from a recognized university
  2. A Special Degree with Pali as a subsidiary subject or a General Degree with Pali as a subject from a recognized university or Institute
  1. A pass at the Final Examination of the Oriental Studies Society (Sri Lanka)
  2. A Pass at the Final Certificate of Vidyodaya Pirivena or Vidyalankara Pirivena
  3. A pass at the Postgraduate Diploma in Pali from a recognized University/ Institute
  4. Any other qualification acceptable to the Faculty Board of the Institute

 

Course fee (for local students) - Rs 40,000.00*

03.2 Master of Arts in Pali Two-year

Minimum Entry Qualifications:

  1. A Special Degree in Pali or an MA (one-year) Degree in Pali

In the absence of the above qualifications,

  1. If a student is deemed to have an expertise in Pali studies to do the research thesis of the Two-year MA Degree programme, such a student’s eligibility is judged through an interview to qualify him/her to enroll for the Two-year MA Degree programme.

Course fee (for local students) - Year 1 Rs 40,000.00*

Year 2 Rs 30,000.00*

03.3 Master of Arts in Buddhist Studies – One Year

Minimum Entry Qualifications:

The candidates seeking admission to the MA in Buddhist Studies should have at least one of the following qualifications:

  1. A Degree from a recognized university
  2. A postgraduate Diploma in Buddhist Studies / Pali from a recognized University/Institute
  3. A pass at the Final Examination of the Oriental Studies Society (Sri Lanka)
  4. A pass in Master of Arts in Buddhist Āyurvedic Counseling from a recognized university / institute
  5. Any other qualification acceptable to the Faculty Board of the Institute

Course fee (for local students) - Rs 40,000.00*

03.4 Master of Arts in Buddhist Studies Two-year

Minimum Entry Qualifications:

  1. A Special Degree First Class or Second Upper in Pali, Buddhist Studies, Buddhist Philosophy, Buddhist Psychology, Buddhist Culture, Buddhist Civilization, Buddhist Heritage and Tourism Industry

or

A Special Degree in Sanskrit, Western Philosophy, Psychology with a Final year thesis related to Buddhist Studies, Buddhist Philosophy, Buddhist Psychology, Buddhist Culture, Buddhist Civilization

or

A first Degree acceptable to the Faculty of Board as eligible to follow the Two-year MA Degree programme

or

An MA (one year) Degree in Buddhist Studies

In the absence of the above qualifications

  1. If a student is deemed to have an expertise in Buddhist Studies to do the research thesis of the Two-year MA, his/her eligibility is judged through an interview.

 Year 2 Rs 30,000.00*

 

03.5 Master of Arts in Buddhist Counseling - One Year

Minimum Entry Qualifications:

 

  1. Postgraduate Diploma in Buddhist Āyurvedic Counseling offered by PGIPBS
  2. A Degree in Āyurvedic Medicine and Surgery offered by a recognized local or international university / institute
  3. A Special Degree in Buddhist Philosophy, Buddhist Culture, Pali, Sanskrit with a Postgraduate Diploma/ Certificate Course in Counseling recognized by the Government of Sri Lanka
  1. A Special Degree in Psychology, Counseling, Philosophy or Sociology
  2. A Degree in Western Medicine from a recognized university
  3. A Degree from a recognized university with three year continous of professional experience in Counseling in an institute/ organization recognized by the Institute and the Government of Sri Lanka

 

  1. A Degree or a qualification accepted by the Faculty Board of the Institute as being equivalent to a Degree or a Higher Degree in Buddhist Studies, Buddhist Philosophy or Pali

Course fee (for local students) - Rs 100,000.00*

  • Course fee is a discounted fee which covers only 25% of the total cost of each study program. It includes registration fee, Library fee and Examination fee. That could be paid at once or in instalments. Half of the prescribed fee or more, should be paid as the first instalment.

Refundable Library Deposit of Rs. 4000.00 should be paid additionally.

The institute will decide the minimum and maximum number of applicants to be enrolled for a study program. Each study program will be started only if satisfactory number of qualified applicants has been applied.

Anyone interested can participate in the above Taught Courses as occasional students and in that case they are not required to take examinations. (Conditions apply.)

  1. Higher Degrees by Research

Applications will be entertained for the following research degree programmes throughout the year. Applications should be submitted in person. 

  • Master of Philosophy - Two Years

Minimum Entry Qualifications:

  1. Master’s Degree of a recognized university in Pali or Buddhist Studies
  2. A First or a Second Class (Upper Division) in a General or Special Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University in Sri Lanka in one of the following areas of study: Buddhist Studies, Buddhist Philosophy, Buddhist Culture, Buddhist Civilization, Indian Philosophy, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Sinhala, Archaeology, History, Psychology, Buddhist Leadership, Pali, Sanskrit, Classical Chinese, Classical Tibetan or any other subject related to these areas of study.
  3. A qualification obtained from a foreign university /institute recognized by the University Grants Commission in Sri Lanka deemed by the Institute as equivalent to a First or Second Class (Upper Division) of a general or a Special Bachelor’s Degree in any of the subjects referred to in (i) or (ii) above.
  4. A qualification obtained from a foreign university /institute deemed by the Institute as equivalent to a First or Second Class (Upper Division) of a General or a Special Bachelor’s Degree in any of the subjects referred to in (i) or (ii) above with a Certificate in Diplomatic level confirming the qualifications.
  5. Any other special qualification/s deemed by the Institute as equivalent to any one of the above-mentioned qualifications.

Course fee (for local students) - for one year - Rs 55,000.00**

  • Doctor of Philosophy (3 Years)

Minimum Entry Qualifications:

An applicant seeking admission to PhD Degree programme by research should fulfil one of the following requirements:

  1. A Master of Philosophy Degree / Two-year Master’s Degree (with a research component) from a recognized university in Pali, Buddhist Studies, Buddhist Philosophy, Buddhist Culture, Buddhist Civilization, Indian Philosophy, and Buddhist Leadership
  2. A First or a Second Class (Upper Division) in a General or Special (Honours) Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university in one of the following areas of study: Buddhist Studies, Buddhist Philosophy, Buddhist Culture, Buddhist Civilization, Indian Philosophy, Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Buddhist Leadership (However, this may vary subject to examination of research skills of the candidate.)
  3. A qualification obtained from a foreign university / institute recognized by the University Grants Commission in Sri Lanka deemed by the Institute as equivalent to a Master of Philosophy Degree /Two-year Master’s Degree (with a research component) and having diplomatic verification from the relevant High Commissions of the authenticity of those certificates
  4. Any other special qualification /s deemed by the Institute as equivalent to any one of the above-mentioned qualifications

Applicants who do not possess any of the above qualifications but who are deemed by the Institute as having already made a distinct contribution to the field of Pali and Buddhist Studies by pursuing academic activities in the field of Buddhist Studies, may apply for PhD Degree. The decision will be taken by the Academic Committee and the Faculty Board after due consideration of such applications.

Course fee (for local students) - for one year - Rs 67,500.00**

** Course fee includes registration fee, Library fee and Examination fee. That could be paid at once or in instalments. Half of the prescribed fee or more, should be paid as the first instalment. Refundable Library Deposit of Rs. 6000.00 should be paid additionally.  

Application forms can be obtained from the website and from office of the Institute at following costs.

Postgraduate Certificate / Postgraduate Diploma / MA -  Rs. 500.00, MPhil  &  PhD -  Rs 1000.00

Application forms can also be requested by post, by sending the deposit slip after paying relevant amount to Peoples Bank - Thimbirigasyaya Branch Account No : 086-100181189664  together with a self-addressed (9”x 4” size) stamped envelope. Applications downloaded from the website should be submitted along with the deposit slip after paying the relevant application fee.

Duly completed applications for taught courses can be submitted via e-mail, by registered post or in person. (If sending by post, mention the name of the course on the upper left side of the envelope.)

Copies of relevant certificates should be submitted along with the application form.

Foreign applicants should attach a certified copy of the passport and a Security Clearance Certificate obtained from home country within three months (if entry visa is required).

 

Glorious Sun Scholarship

15 Scholarships for MA programs and 6 Scholarships for PhD program will be offered. Applications will be called annually.
